Papers, 1897-1921 [typed transcripts].

The Edmund N. Carpenter papers consist of typed transcripts made by his nephew, Donald F. Carpenter, for his own use and study prior to giving the originals to the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society. They thus form two file units within the larger body of Donald F. Carpenter's own papers. The transcripts do not represent the full range of Edmund Carpenters papers. One file contains transcripts from some of Edmund's diaries (1900-1906) with an appended list of his various travels between 1897 and 1937. The second contains transcripts of selected letters (1897-1921) to and from Edmund N. Carpenter. Both the diaries and the letters often describe the same events in slightly different form. Most of the letters transcribed are personal, although they describe both business and personal matters.

The family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was established in 1802 and during the 19th century it became one of the United States' most important manufacturers of black powder. In 1902 three younger du Pont cousins: T. Coleman, Alfred I., and Pierre S. took over the company and within three years succeeded in bringing 75% of the American explosives industry (which at that time included black powder, dynamite, and smokeless powder) under their control.
