Letters, 1830-1831.

Consists of four letters written by Edward E. Mitchell to his family while traveling from New York City to Charleston, S.C. on the Empress. Mitchell described his experiences at sea, including references to his health, lack of food, and the roughness of the water as a result of bad weather encountered. Although Mitchell did not like sea travel, he wrote in 1831 that he would not return by stage coach because it would have been more expensive and the roads were in horrible condition.
