The records consist of an account and ledger book of Alan Wood (1838-41) which covers a general merchandise business and ore accounts in East Nantmeal Township, Chester County, Pa. It contains a memorandum on the Wood family signed and dated by Alan Wood in 1875. There is also a letterbook (1840) for the firm of Alan Wood & Brother at the time when it was operating the Delaware Iron Works.

Alan Wood was a 19th century iron and steel manufacturer. He was engaged with his father, James Wood (1771-1851) at the Delaware Iron Works in Wooddale, Del. (1826-32) and at Conshohocken, Pa. (1832-40). In 1840 he again began operating the Delaware Iron Works with his brother John as Alan Wood & Brother, and he purchased it in his own right in 1843. James Wood (1771-1851) was an important early 19th century iron manufacturer in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Between 1826 and 1832 he operated the Delaware Iron Works at Wooddale, Del., in partnership with his son, Alan (1800-1881). In 1832 they relocated the business to Conshohocken, Pa., where it formed the nucleus of the future Alan Wood Steel Company. From the description of Partnership agreement, 1834.
