The records consist of the "personal copies" of wills and inventories of citizens of New Castle County, Del., from 1680 to 1850 arranged alphabetically by surname. The files record the value, composition and disposition of the decedendt's estate, including inventories of real and personal property. The probate records constitute an important source of data on levels of wealth and on material culture in the Colonial and Early National Periods. Among the persons enumerated are the first generations of industrialists and industrial workers along the Brandywine River.
