Chiefly Letters from Mary R.B. Howard, wife of architect John Galen Howard to family members (dated 1920-1959) or to Sadie and Warren Gregory (dated 1904-1956). Also includes ALS from Eulora M. Jennings to Mary Howard, Oct. 27, 1910, and transcripts of letters from Mary during two European visits, 1886 and 1892. Letters to Mary R.B. Howard and her daughter, Janette from her sons, Charles H. Howard (letters 1959-77), Henry T. Howard (letters 1962-65), and Robert B. Howard (letters 1919, 1964-65) typed transcript of letters from Europe, 1886 and 1892, written by members of the Bradbury and Rich families to their relatives in the States; 2 letters from Beth Gregory (1923) to her family, with mention of the Howards; a photo postcard of Byrneside; a mimeographed typescript of a review of John Galen Howard's Pheidias.

A leader in the American Renaissance Movement, with special interest in the Beaux-Arts style, John Galen Howard came to California in 1892-1893. He was chosen to execute the Hearst plan for the University of California, Berkeley, and later founded the School of Architecture at Berkeley.
