The Western Forestry and Conservation Association was founded in 1909. It was originally composed of "three private forestry and forest fire associations and two conservation associations in the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana." William R. Schofield held a variety of forestry-related jobs. The U.S. Forest Service engaged young Schofield in seasonal and regular assignments before and after he graduated with a forestry degree from the University of Idaho in 1916. In the decade after World War I he held jobs with county and state governments, a lumber company, and a lumber trade association.
