Volume begun (by Henry Rutan?) as a ciphering book, 1767, and later used as a ledger, 1769-1822 (by Henry Rutan) and 1841-1842 (by Henry S. Rutan). The volume also contains miscellaneous notations, among which are the text of a 1795 sales agreement for a slave ("Tom," aged about 35 years, sold by Henry Rutan for 100 pounds), the 1795 text of a legal document pertaining to Samuel H. Rutan and "An Elogy on the Death of John Voorhis."
