Two pocket diaries (Apr.-Dec. 1861 and Feb.- Aug. 1865) describe recruiting in Ohio, camp life and military operations in West Virginia and Virginia in 1861, and in Texas in 1865; Graybill's duties at the court martial of the of the 1st Division of the 25th Army Corps in Feb.-Aug. 1865. Documents, orders and correspondence pertaining to the 22nd Regiment of Colored Infantry (1864, Jan. - 1865, July), Graybill's attempts to resign in Apr. 1865, proceedings of the court martial of the 1st Division of the 25th Army Corps (1865, May - September); Graybill's personal papers: marriage certificate, commissions, discharge certificates, receipts, correspondence and documents regarding his pension (1881-1908), and membership in the Grand Army of the Republic. Photographs include 39 pictures of commissioned officers and privates of the 22nd Colored Infantry Regiments, family photos, and portraits of Juan Nepomuceno Cortina and Ignacio Mejia.

Levi S. Graybill was born into the family of Daniel Graybill who moved to Ohio from Harrisburg, Pa. in 1859. Before the Civil War Levi S. Graybill worked as a carpenter and studied law with Martin Welker in Wooster, Ohio. In June 1861 he enlisted in the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and fought in Virginia and West Virginia. In Sept. 1863, Graybill was discharged from service in the rank of Sergeant of Co. E. His discharge certificate qualified him as "not fit of Invalid Corps," due to a "disease ...
