Program administrative files, 1953-1982.

These records consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, publications and other materials concerning department policy, procedures, organization, programs, and fiscal or personnel matters. The series includes and alphabetical correspondence file and miscellaneous subject folders. The subjects include the State Ethics Commission, Affirmative Action programs, the State Sunset Law, and general information on the state merit system and employment procedures. Of particular interest are the records regarding the fire at the Dept. of Archives and History in 1974 and the fire at the Governor's Mansion in 1975. Correspondence concerning the insurance compensations for both fires and the refurbishing costs for the Governor's Mansion are included. Much of the correspondence is to or from directors Peter A. Brannon (1955-1967) and Milo B. Howard (1967-1981).

Peter Alexander Brannon was born at Seale, Russell Co., Ala., 30 Aug. 1882. He was educated at the public school, Seale High School, and graduated in 1900 from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, majoring in pharmaceutical chemistry. He married Frances Frazer in Columbus, Ga., on 5 Oct. 1904.
