Fifty eight years of pediatric practice in Montgomery, Alabama: reminiscence, 1968.

Reminiscence, 1968, typed, of Dawson, about his pediatric practice in Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Ala., in which he discussed the city of Montgomery, concentrating especially on the state of medical care and the lack of specialists there, as well as the resentment of older doctors to him when he announced his pediatric practice. Also discussed were the location of his office, the drugs doctors relied on in Montgomery, transportation and the lack of paved roads before World War I, fees he received, the use of diagnostic tools, especially the x-ray; the medical profession as a humanitarian profession rather than a pecuriary one, the alternative being socialized medicine; nurses, charity work he did during the Depression, the most common childhood diseases, especially diarrhea, rickets, pellagra and diptheria; education he gave to children at schools on preventative medicine, and humorous stories. He mentioned several physicians: Dr. John Blue, Dr. L.L. Hill, both surgeons, and Dr. Charles A. Thigpen and Dr. Paul Mertins, Sr., as well as his wife, Jennie.
