The correspondence files of the Judge of the Superior Court, Harry Toulmin, consist of letters which depict the judicial functions in the Mississippi Territory. Harry Toulmin was appointed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1804, Judge of the Superior Court of the Mississippi Territory, and subsequently became the first federal judge of what was then called the Tombigbee District. Toulmin's judicial function ceased in 1819 when the Mississippi Territory was divided. Included are letters to James Madison, U.S. Secretary of State, excerpts from newspaper articles about Judge Toulmin, letters to Governor David Holmes, correspondence from sheriffs and military officials, and other related correspondence.
