Universalist minister Augusta Jane Chapin was born in Lakeville, N.Y., the oldest of seven children of Almon Morris and Jane (Pease) Chapin. She attended Olivet College in Olivet, Mich., and Michigan Female College; during her college years she became interested in religious thought and was drawn to the Universalist belief that all persons will be saved.
