Miss Holland diary, 1869 Sept. 1-Oct. 24.

This young woman from Liverpool, England, kept a diary during her voyage from England to New Orleans, Louisiana. Holland's grandmother, mother, aunt, and four siblings accompanied her aboard the sailing ship "Rosalie" to meet her father in New Orleans. The diarist describes the weather, her family's daily activities on board, and some details regarding the ship. She also provides personal comments regarding members of the crew and captain ("Grandison") and adventures, such as passing through two hurricanes, the captain's drinking spells, and the advances of an Irish sailor toward her aunt. Holland describes some places they pass while en route, including Mont Serrat, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and, finally, New Orleans. Her account of the ship being pulled over the sandbar at the mouth of the Mississippi is particularly interesting.
