Military correspondence, 1896-1899.

These letters document the military affairs of the state and Governor William O. Bradley's role as commander-in-chief of the Kentucky State Guard. Included are letters concerning possible rioting in Louisville due to the election of 1897; papers documenting the Morris-Philpot incident in Clay County (July 1899), and the subsequent use of troops to restore peace; and correspondence concerning men with guns in the capitol building (March 1896).

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
