John Brown (May 9, 1800, Torrington, Connecticut – December 2, 1859, Charles Town, Virginia) was born in Connecticut in 1800 before migrating with his family at an early age to the Connecticut Western Reserve. He failed at several business ventures and land speculations before devoting his life to the abolition of slavery.
