The Ephrata Cloister, near Lancaster, Pa., was a religious community of German Seventh Day Baptists founded by Johann Conrad Beissel in 1728. Under Beissel's guidance, Ephrata became known for its mystical music, hymn writings, and manuscript illuminations.
