Biography Educated at Harvard University (A.B. 1953, A.M. 1957, and Ph.D. 1960), W. B. Carnochan joined the English faculty at Stanford University in 1960. He chaired the English department from 1971-73 and has served the University as dean of graduate studies and vice-provost, 1975-80, and director of the Stanford Humanities Center, 1985-1991.
