Henry Evans was born in Superior, Wisconsin in 1918. He came to San Francisco and opened the Porpoise Bookshop in 1944. Evans subsequently acquired an 1852 Washington hand press on which he printed books and pamphlets. In 1958 he began printing linoleum block botanical prints on the same press, for which he gained worldwide renown. Evans passed away in 1990. Fair was living in Chicago, Ill. when the news of the Calif. gold discovery reached that city. He immediately made plans to terminate his affairs and leave for Calif. His knowledge of placer and quartz mining made him a well-to-do mine and mill owner. In association with Flood, Mackay, and O'Brien, he became a developer of the silver deposits known as the Comstock Lode. Fair served in the U.S. Senate from 1881 to 1887.
