George Rowe was born at Dartmouth, England, 1797 and was a noted English landscape artist. Rowe was Commissioned by the British government to make watercolour drawings of the Victorian goldfields and arrived in Melbourne in 1852. Rowe returned to England in 1959. Irish born lithographer, portraitist and caricaturist, Doyle worked in London as a portrait lithographer and eventually turned to political caricature. His plates were issued by the publisher, Thomas M. McLean, in volume form both in 1841 and 1844. Doyle used the pseudonym H.B. to sign most of his works.
