John S. Sherburne letters : Calif. and Nev., to family in Boston : ALS, 1859-1870.

Consists of 98 letters, chiefly from Sherburne, written in San Francisco and other parts of Calif. and Nevada to his mother and his sister, Marion, in Boston. The letters discuss family concerns, Sherburne's attempts to establish himself financially in San Francisco, effects of the 1868 San Francisco earthquake, business conditions, boardinghouse life, mining regions and conditions, and municipal and state elections. Includes several letters written to family members in 1859 while on voyage from Boston to Singapore, with ports of call in Batavia and Penang. Also includes two envelopes, one addressed to J.S. Sherburne and one to M.B. Sherburne, both in Boston.
