Primarily views of individual buildings in various locations around the city: Golden Gate Park bandstand; City Hall; Hall of Justice; Post Office; Ferry Building; Albert Price Memorial Library; power house on Market St.; Church of the Advent; St. Dominic's Church; a church near Market St.; Mission Dolores; Odd Fellows Cemetery; Pierce Rudolf Warehouse; Monadnock Building; Flood Building; Call Building; Cowles Building; Hale Bros. Building; Fairmount Hotel; St. Francis Hotel; Palace Hotel; Cliff House. Also includes views of refugees, refugee camps, pedestrians and vehicles; refugees posing near street kitchens and temporary restaurants; refugees standing amidst rubble and ruins; and businesses housed in makeshift quarters. Also includes views of the stage of the Greek Theatre (Berkeley?); ferry boats; a train, a cyanotype of an Asian girl at the beach; Mountain View; Larkspur; and Palo Alto, Calif.

At the time of the earthquake in 1906, Plachek was working for the city of Chicago in the architecture department. A week after the disaster, Plachek and a group of other architects were sent to San Francisco to study the effects of fire and earthquakes on buildings. Plachek stayed in the Bay Area a number of months before returning to Chicago to make his report. He later returned to California where he worked for the state for about four years.
