The Ahrens and Ott Manufacturing Company was established in 1865 by Theodore Ahrens, Sr. and Henry Ott. It started as a plumbing and pipe fitting business then turned to the manufacture of wholesale plumbing and steamfitting materials. In 1886, the business was reorganized as the Ahrens and Ott Manufacturing Company with Theodore Ahrens, Jr. as the treasurer and general manager. A small plant was built on 16th and Arbegust.
