Applications for military service exemptions, 1863-1864.

The Alabama legislature approved an act enumerating the persons exempt from militia service and providing the governor with the option of granting special exemptions (Ala. Acts, 2, p. 12-14, [1863]). The records consist of letters and petitions to the governor from constituents, probate judges, and examining boards requesting either exemptions as specified in the Act or special exemptions from the governor. Information available in these records includes the name of the applicants, the reasons why the governor should grant an exemption, whether an exemption was granted, and sometimes a brief reason for the governor's decision.
