Civil case files, 1897-1974.

These are complete case files of civil litigation in which the Office of the Attorney General was involved as plaintiff or defendant. In some cases, the Attorney General is a codefendant or coplaintiff. In other cases, the Attorney General is the attorney for another department of state government. Many of the cases are in local district or circuit courts. Others go as far as the state Court of Appeals or the Alabama Supreme Court. Some of them go to the Supreme Court. The files include such items as carbon copies of decrees, motions, briefs, and writs, the originals of which are in the records of the court involved. All courts in the state, from trial courts up to the state Supreme Court keep the records of civil cases permanently, either in original form or on microfilm. Correspondence, newspaper clippings, and published copies of the decision rendered may also be included in the files.
