Papers, 1904-1984, of and about Cunningham, containing an autobiography, complete version, 1917; and short version, 1984; financial records, 1903-1905; addresses, 1904-1906; scrapbooks, 1904-1905 and 1913-1914; clippings, 1914-1951; and printed materials, 1904-1921. Arranged as described above. Of particular interest is the autobiography, which sums up his family life, boyhood, education, his medical career as Ala. Prison Physician, surgeon at TCI, builder of Cunningham Hospital, and Jefferson Co. Medical Officer, as well as his political career as an Ala. Representative, Senator, Lt. Governor, and Acting Governor. The addresses include a 1904 speech at Howard College, and a 1906 address in his attempt to be elected Governor of Ala. The first scrapbook, 1904-1905, details Cunningham's time as Governor, and the second one, 1913-1914, covers his career as Jefferson Co. Medical Officer, as well as other subjects. The clippings, 1914-1951, hold articles on Cunningham, and printed materials, 1904-1921, and include a memorial on Cunningham and other items.

Cunningham was born 1855 Aug. 25 to Moses W. and Nancy Caroline (Russell) Cunningham at Mt. Hope, Lawrence Co., Ala. He married Sue L. Moore on 1876 Aug. 13. After his first wife died, he married Annice Taylor in Birmingham. In 1878 he entered Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York City. He served as Ala. Prison Physician at Wetumpka beginning 1881, and in 1885 became physician and surgeon for the Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company. He represen...
