Inactive case files, 1916-1987.

This series consists of case files created for all inmates and parolees in Ala. When an individual is first sentenced and enters the corrections system, a case file is begun for him/her. When the individual becomes eligible for parole, his/her case file is presented to the State Pardons and Parole Board for its review. All investigations, decisions, and other actions of the State Pardons and Parole Board are documented in the inmate case file. When the individual has served his parole sentence, the file is deactivated and eventually transferred to the State Archives. If an individual reenters the criminal justice system, his/her case file is reactivated. Typical case files consist of several basic components which include an FBI I.D. sheet, a capsuled history of past criminal activities, an identification sheet from the Dept. of Corrections and several other basic information pieces. Case files also potentially include hundreds of other documents which evidence decisions made by the Pardons and Parole Board. Among these are parole certificates, board action letters, and investigation sheets. Recent files also consist of victim notification materials which include correspondence from victims, notification lists, and other related materials. The size and content of an inmate case file is dependent on a number of factors; however, most prominent is the extent to which an individual is involved with the system.
