Papers, 1837-1968.

The Judkins family papers consist of genealogical materials, letters, correspondence, photoprints, legal and financial documents, scrapbooks, poetry, reminiscences, and printed materials. The legal documents deal primarily with real property in Montgomery Co. and Elmore Co., Ala., including a lawsuit between the Ala. National Bank of Birmingham and Rececca E. Williams. Comprising nearly one-half of the collection are the papers, 1870-1919, of James H. Judkins, in which are discussed the Judkins and Durr families; Brazil--emigration and immigration; Alabama--politics and government; race relations; prisons--Alabama; and other subjects. There is also poetry, reminiscences, and photoprints of Judkins. The papers, 1897-1958, of Willulah Judkins also occupy almost one-half of the collection. In her papers are discussed the Durr family; Judkins family; University of Alabama; Queen's College (Oxford, England); Alabama--Economic conditions; European War, 1914-1918; Europe--Description and travel; Wisconsin--Description and travel; and other subjects. There are also photoprints, a scrapbook, cookbooks, and printed materials.

James H. (James Henry) Judkins was born 1839 Feb. 2 in Montgomery Co., Ala., to John Christopher and Eliza Jane Young Judkins. He attended the University of Ala. and the University of Va. Virginia Foster Durr (1903-1999) was a civil rights activist and a friend of Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson. She was a relief worker during the Great Depression, worked as a lobbyist and campaign worker for Progressive Party candidate Henry Wallace in the 1940s, ran as a candidate for governor of Virginia in 1948, and worked as a civil rights activist in Montgomery, Alabama in the 1950s and 1960s.
