William J. Simmons Ku Klux Klan photograph album, 1917-1922.

These photographic images were made between 1917 and 1922. They show numerous Ku Klux Klan activities in and around Atlanta, including Klan ceremonies on and around Stone Mountain (Ga.). Also of note are photos of Simmons in his imperial wizard robe with other officers, as well as a photo of a textile factory showing workers making Klan robes. Landmarks depicted in the photos include the "Imperial Palace" headquarters of the Klan; Simmons' home; Klan property on the Peachtree Creek battlefield in Georgia; and Lanier University, a small college in Atlanta bought by the Klan.

William Joseph Simmons was born in Harpersville (Ala.) in 1880. After serving in the Spanish-American War, he became a Methodist circuit preacher in Alabama and Florida. He served in that capacity until 1912 when he was suspended at the Methodist Bishop Conference. Simmons then became active in numerous fraternal organizations, primarily the Woodmen of the World in Birmingham (Ala.). The Ku Klux Klan was formally incorporated under the laws of the state of Georgia on Dec. 4, 1915. The incorporated organization is a continuance of the earlier post Civil War Reconstruction Era unincorporated Ku Klux Klan and of the Knights of the White Camellia. Women of the Ku Klux Klan was incorporated at a late date as a separate entity.
