Notebook of cases in the lower courts and the general court of Virginia, 1817-1826.

This volume of holograph notes and newspaper clippings details cases tried in the lower courts of Botetourt, Brunswick, Fauquier, Henrico, Lunenburg, Ohio, Stafford, and Washington counties, Virginia, and appealed to the General Court. The appeals were on novel or fine points of law and include the judgment of the General Court. Holograph notes were for cases involving Jerry Mann (a slave), Alexander Goode, Jacob Lester, Thomas Harrison, William R. Smith, Nancy Tankersly, and Lawrence Linton. Newspaper clippings for other cases, including Treasurer John Preston, are pasted in. The donor, Frances Ellyson, wrote her birthday (25 September 1861) and her sister Ellie's (2 July 1867) on blank pages when she was a child.
