Letters from Washington to the English agriculturalist concerning farming methods, crops, stock, weather, soil conditions, labor costs, taxes, and Washington's plan to subdivide and rent the majority of his Mount Vernon land. Also included are Young's letter initiating the correspondence, a printed map of Mount Vernon from a drawing by Washington, and engraved portraits of Washington, Young, and Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford.

George Washington (b. Feb. 22, 1732, Westmoreland County, Va.-d. Dec. 14, 1799, Mount Vernon, VA) was the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. Arthur Young was an English civil servant and writer on agriculture and social economy. Born and raised in Suffolk, he began farming his family land and managed a farm in Essex; his agricultural experiments were largely unsuccessful, but he learned from the experience and produced several popular books on farming.
