U.S Boundary Commissioner, antiquarian and bibliographer; John Bartlett was appointed in 1850 to establish the border between Mexico and the United States. He worked in Texas and southern New Mexico until 1852, when he decided to go to San Diego and work from there to the east. He was removed from his position in February 1853.
