Collection, 1959-1976.

A collection of 22 letters and other documents relating to Lewis Mumford, one of the nations most important literary critics, proponant of national urban design and historian of technology and the urban life. The correspondence is between Mumford and Frederic Warburg (1898- ), his British publisher and chairman of Secker and Warburg, publishers of among others, Thomas Mann, George Orwell, and H. G. Wells. Mumford's letters written mostly from Amenia, New York, his home for many years, contain his comments and reflections, often acerbic, about book reviewers, publishers, politics, and economics. There is also frequent mention in both his and Warburg's letters about the progress of his various books, including The City in History, Techniques in Civilization, and others. There is also a typescript of his speech accepting the National Medal for Literature, given to him by the National Book Committee, 1972.
