Letter, 1816 April 4.

Letter to Smith Thompson, the father of one of the students at Hamilton College. The younger Thompson was convicted, by a faculty court of inquiry, of fighting with another student, Benjamin L. Cuyler. Cuyler was dismissed from the school. Thompson's punishment was to read Locke's essay on human understanding and to recite it to several of his father's literary friends. Backus states that "if he returns by the 12th of next June with a certificate that he has read Locke, he will be received into his class."
