Benson-Thompson family papers, 1803-1936 ; (bulk 1820-1860).

Personal correspondence and business papers of the related families of Elias Benson, physician, of Marion Co., Ala., and John Ford Thompson, officer of the Alabama Militia. The families emigrated from Greenville and Spartanburg counties, S.C., to Alabama. Also includes papers of the family of Gov. Andrew Barry Moore of Alabama, official correspondence between commanders of the Alabama Militia (1836-1840), letters reflecting conditions in Alabama during the Civil War, several letters on medical education at the University of Louisiana (now Tulane University), and letters from students describing Greenville College (now Tusculum College) and the University of Alabama.

Born in Spartanburg District, South Carolina, Andrew B. Moore (1807-1873) was a lawyer and the Governor of Alabama from 1857 until the outbreak of the Civil War. On December 24, 1860, Moore issued writs of election, leading to the Secession Convention of 1861. During the war, he was appointed a special aide-de-camp under General Albert Sidney Johnston. A contemporary of Moore, John Willis Ellis (1820-1861) was a lawyer, judge, and the Governor of North Carolina from 1859...
