The interest of Karen Daniels Petersen (born ca. 1910) in Native Americans was sparked during childhood by her grandfather Asa W. Daniels and her great uncle Jared W. Daniels, who had come to Minnesota in the 1850s as U.S. government physicians to the Dakota Indians. In the 1950s Petersen began purchasing traditional Ojibwe crafts from residents of northern Minnesota reservations for resale through St. Paul churches. Frederick Ferdinand "Fritz" Kramer began his service in the Diocese of Minnesota in 1953 with his appointment as vicar in charge of the Samuel Memorial Mission, Naytahwaush, and of St. Philip's Church, Rice Lake.
