This collection documents the preparation of Volume IV. The material includes the administrative files of correspondence with authors, board members, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, which funded the project, 1976-1980. In addition, it contains authors' release forms, personnel data, and minutes of the Advisory Board and the Committee of Consultants. Evaluations of subjects considered for inclusion, research material, draft articles, and biographical data on subjects form the major part of the collection.
