Charles E. Leverich diary, 1863 July 6-1864 Sept. 21.

The diary records Leverich's travels from Winchester to Richmond, Virginia, where he visited friends, and his stay with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Leverich (refugees from New Orleans), in Columbia County, Georgia. Entries after Aug. 21, 1863 describe Leverich's activities as battery officer for General Simon Bolivar Buckner under General Braxton Bragg during the campaign near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Described are the winter quarters of the Confederate Army at Dalton and Oxford, Georgia, and the armies of General Joseph E. Johnston and John B. Hood. Names of civilians and military personnel are recorded along with changes in military posts, encounters with other units, and skirmishes with Federal troops during the retreat to Atlanta. The diary ends after the capture of Atlanta by Federal forces in 1864. Included is a roll of the 4th Company of the Battalion Washington Artillery.

Simon Bolivar Buckner, governor of Kentucky during 1887-91, was born near Munfordville, Kentucky, in 1823, to Aytell Hartswell and Elizabeth Ann Buckner. He entered West Point in 1840 and saw active duty in the Mexican War after graduation. He later became head of Kentucky's state militia, then joined the Confederate Army as brigadier general at the start of the Civil War.
