Letter : Richmond, Virginia, to Dr. Scandella, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1798 January 25.

Latrobe's comments in this letter confirm his dissatisfaction. This was caused partially by differences in regard to compensation due Latrobe for services in the design and construction of a state penitentiary. Latrobe was most impressed by the natural environment of Virginia, but wrote, "Indeed I am here truly unhappy."
