Sanford S. Atwood office files, 1959-1977.

The collection consists of papers of Sanford Soverhill Atwood from 1963-1977. The papers consist of and include correspondence; a small number of photographs; and subject files including reports, speeches, financial plans, publications and memoranda documenting his administration at Emory University and its schools, faculty, students, and committees. The collection also contains correspondence, memoranda, minutes, studies, working papers, reports, press releases, and proposal pertaining to his service on committees and boards outside the university. Of particular interest are papers relating to his involvement with the City of Atlanta Housing Resources Committee (1966-1971), the Committee for Economic Development (1961-1976) regarding MARTA planning and construction, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Sea Grant Program (1972-1973), and the Atlanta Education Improvement Project, Urban Laboratory in Education (1965-1972) dealing with Atlanta Public Schools. Additionally, materials related to student protests and unrest at Emory University in 1968 and 1969 are well documented.
