Born in Hancock, Mich. on Mar. 15, 1867, Mary Chase Perry Stratton founded the nationally famous Pewabic Pottery Company in Detroit in 1907, named for a mine near her Upper Peninsula birthplace. After the sudden death of her father near the end of the 19th century, she came with her mother and two older siblings to Detroit, where her brother Fred worked as a druggist in 1900.
