Manuscript of Aelfric's texts as transcribed by Sir Thomas Phillipps, dated 1837, and accompanied by an early trial printed version of the Grammar with corrections in Phillipps' hand printed at his Middle Hill Press. The final printed version issued in 1838 by W. Clowes of London omitted most of the Grammar.

On inheriting his father's estate at Middle Hill in Worcestershire, Phillipps embarked on a career of collecting manuscripts and books. Aelfric (fl. 1006), Abbot of Eynsham in Worcestershire, was a prolific writer. He became known as "Grammaticus" for his Latin grammar and glossary. In 1837 the manuscript collector Sir Thomas Phillipps discovered in an old binding among the archives of Worcestershire Cathedral a manuscript by Aelfric in the orthography of the 12th century that included a Saxon grammar, a short poem lamenting the number of foreign bishops in England, and a fragment of a poem, The debate of the body and the soul. ...
