John Beeson was born in England and emigrated to the United States in 1830. In 1834 he settled in Illinois, where he worked as a farmer and was a supporter of temperance and abolition. Beeson emigrated to Oregon in 1853, and as a result of the Rogue River Indian War he became an advocate for the rights of American Indians.
