The papers consist of the scientific correspondence of Sir John Herschel and include letters from eminent British and foreign scientists, together with a number of drafts and copies of Herschel's replies. Also included are Herschel's diaries, laboratory notebooks, astronomical observation books, specimens of his pioneering photographic work, and selected books.

Mary Somerville (born Mary Fairfax) was born to William George and Margaret Fairfax on December 26, 1780 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, Scotland. Mary became interested in mathematics while a teenager.
