James Graham Ramsay papers: William G. Ramsay African correspondence, 1885-1892 (inclusive), [microform].

The papers consist of correspondence, mostly from William G. Ramsay, to his family in Salisbury, North Carolina, describing his voyage to London in 1885 and later to Africa where he worked for the Akankoo Mining Company of Axim, Gold Coast Colony. Correspondence after 1889 includes letters with his family, letters from officials of the mining company, and from W. T. Linton, a coconut importer in London, who managed Ramsay's affairs after his death.

James Graham Ramsay (1823-1903) attended Davidson College, 1823- 1841, and Jefferson Medcical College in Philadelphia, 1844-1848, and practiced medicine in Iredell and Rowan counties, N.C. He was a Whig state senator, 1856-1864, and served in the Confederate Congress. After the war, he was active in the state Republican Party and served again in the legislature in 1883.
