Personal, business, and official correspondence of Jones, a lawyer, businessman, territorial delegate from Michigan and Wisconsin, and later a state senator from Iowa. Personal letters, written primarily after his move West, to college friends from his days at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, describe the business climate, the status of the territoral and state governments, and general living conditions. Business correspondence mainly relates to lead mining and smelting in the Fever River or Galena, Illinois region. Jones' official correspondence with other early political leaders and with his constituents is primarily routine and includes discussions of the sale of public lands, fur trading, and the relations between Indians and settlers and with the federal government.
