Orderly book containing general and regimental orders of the 6th Virginia Regiment, covering the time from Mar. 18 to Aug. 28, 1776. Scattered records and notes made by the owner of the two plantations in Amelia County - Flatt Creek and Grove Brook. The records that immediately follow the text of the orderly book cover the period from 1783 to 1811, and include accounts, inventories, notes on the contracts with overseers, recipes, home remedies, and records of "Experiments in Planting". The records also mention Negro slaves.

The 6th regiment of Virginia was organized on Feb. 28, 1776 at Williamsburg to consist of 10 companies from Pittsylvania, Amherst, Buckingham, Charles City, Lunenburg, New Kent, Mecklenburg, Dinwiddie, Prince George and Spotsylvania Counties. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
