Brock Collection: Richmond, Va. collection, 1743-1900.

Miscellaneous documents from the files of courts located in Richmond, chiefly the Hustings Court and Richmond Circuit Court. Included are wills, depositions, lawsuits, and other documents, mostly dealing with debts, inheritance, and various criminal charges. Some items contain references to slaves. Scattered letters and documents accumulated by various city offices, charitable organizations, and institutions of learning -- the City Council and its committees, Chamber of Commerce, School Board, Richmond College, superintendent of Richmond City Streets, City Engineer, City Almshouse, Reformatory, Almshouse for the Colored, etc. Also included is a small group of communications from the Department of Justice received by U. S. Marshall in Richmond. The materials touch upon various aspects of the city's life and administration - city planning, collection of taxes, law enforcement, city elections, etc. Also included are a few letters relating to the statues of Robert E. Lee and Henry Clay. Most materials cover the post-Civil War period.

Wirt County was named for William Wirt, who gained fame in Virgtinia as a lawyer and perhaps is best known for his role in the prosecution of Aaron burr for treason. It was created in 1848 from sections of Wood and Jackson Counties. Wirt County was one of the fifty western Virginia counties to form the state of West Virginia in 1863.
