Letters to James Lanman Penniman, 1845-1853.

Comprises 56 letters written by Marian C. Watres to her son James L. Penniman from 1845-1851. She writes from Philadelphia, from her country home "Brookdale" near Hartsville, Pa. and from Norwich, Conn. One item, a fragment (1853), is from Charles Watres. Letters express her concern for her son's health, deportment, and his studies (including his time at Yale, 1850-1851); some letters describe events in Philadelphia and details of Watres' family life. The final letter is dated 19 Oct 1851; written just before her death on 31 October. Most letters are signed "Mother" or M. C. Watres.

Marian Chandler Lanman Penniman Watres, b. 7 Sept. 1797, was the daughter of Judge James Lanman of Norwich, Conn., married Obadiah Penniman (d. 1836), who is the father of James Lanman Penniman, and later married Charles Watres of Philadelphia; she died 31 October 1851. James Lanman Penniman was born 9 July 1832 in Cincinnati, Ohio and died 2 August 1890 in Philadelphia, Pa., graduated Yale College, A.B. 1853, A.M., 1855.
