John Coffey Hays papers, 1845-1874.

The bulk of the collection covers the period Hays served as sheriff and consists chiefly of legal papers and documents pertaining to his activities as tax collector and agent of the Superior Court. Includes two ledgers of state and county tax records; one vol. listing property sold for non-payment of taxes; depositions, summonses, bonds of indemnity, and other legal documents; Hays' field notes for the survey of San Diego Pueblo lands; letters concerning surveys and land claims during his tenure as deputy surveyor and surveyor-general; and a few items relating to Berryessa Rancho and New Almaden Quicksilver Mine, and to Hays' ownership of Redwood Ranch in San Francisco.
