CCC administrative files, 1939-1947.

The Forestry Division of the Dept. of Conservation was responsible for the maintenance, supervision, operation, and control of all state forests. The division was the chief administrative arm of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) forestry work in Ala. during its years of operation, 1933-1942. The forestry work of the CCC on state and private lands was directed toward construction of various improvements designed especially to advance the forest fire prevention work carried out by the division. The federal direction of the work was accomplished through the forest service of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. This series consists of subject files documenting the functions of the division in its operation of the CCC in Ala. The files contain correspondence, reports, publications, project plans, drawings, blueprints, and some photographs concerning agreements, claims, forest control, cooperation, equipment and materials, finance, project improvements, camp inspections, personnel, projects, publications, safety, statistics, supply, and other routine material. Included in the records are correspondence and memos from the Dept. of Agriculture, Dept. of the Interior, regional forest offices, and Ala. state foresters Brooks Toler and Page S. Bunker. The series documents certain administrative areas particularly well such as conditions of CCC camps and projects, personnel training, short and long range work plans, and transfers of completed projects from federal to state control. Included in the series are records from 1939-1947 some of which document the administration of CCC projects continued by the division after the CCC program ended in 1942.
